What Should I Know About Having Second Baby Shower

As everyone knows, preparing for a baby means acquiring a lot of new items – which makes a baby shower almost a necessity. It is also a wonderful way for family and friends to show their love and support. Having a shower for a second baby has often been seen as excessive, since the parents will likely already have the big-ticket items like cribs and strollers. You can now hold a shower for a second baby, if you take certain things into consideration.

You might also make it a “baby” baby shower – as in a shower focusing on those small, basic items that are always going to be needed, like burping cloths, diapers, and other essentials. You could also ask the parents what they did not receive the first time around, and add those items to the registry. Or, instead of a baby shower, you can have a mom shower, asking guests to bring gifts that mom will appreciate as her delivery date approaches. These gifts might be luxury items like a box of decadent chocolates, or perhaps something practical, like a stationery set to respond to gifts.

You might want to make the shower focused on mom, reminding her that she will not be pregnant forever with gifts like wine or her favorite hard liquor, or savory salty snacks she may have had to give up. You might want to arrange for tickets or gift certificates to some special event or treat, like a concert or spa day – but be sure to include babysitting. Another useful idea is to sit down with the dad and the mom’s loved ones, and organize a dry-erase calendar with concrete offers of help where it is likely to be needed.

Some tasks that you could arrange for include getting the house organized and laundry done so mom and baby can come home to a clean house, helping transport the older child to his/her activities, or going along to help out on a big grocery or warehouse club run. The calendar can be revealed to the mom-to-be at the shower, along with all the names and phone numbers of the volunteers. In some cases, both mom and baby are set, and don’t need anything new. You can also just have a straight-up party, intimate or with many friends and family, to celebrate the upcoming birth.

As an option, ask guests to bring baby items which you can later donate to a charity or women’s shelter. You might also ask everyone to bring small portions of prepared food that can be frozen or stored (this is known as a “freezer party”). This will be of great help to the mom as she gets closer to her due date and during the first week or so after the birth. If having this kind of a shower, however, you’ll need to let mom know so she can see if she has enough space for everything, as well as choose a date very close to her delivery date.

Lastly, if the new baby is what is often known as a caboose baby (several years younger than the next brother or sister), you can still hold a full baby shower. Many moms and dads in this situation need to start all over again, as the big items might no longer meet safety guidelines – or may have been donated altogether.

Don’t forget that the type of shower is secondary to the purpose of the shower itself, which is to show the mom that she has the love and support of her friends and family.
